Chickweed A Healing Herb
|
Chickweed (Stellaria media) | |
I always thought of it as a very annoying weed that, in the spring invaded my yard and garden. I despised it for it’s rapid growth until I learn of it’s healing properties. Actually it’s an herb. Having long sprawling branches that trail over the ground. It has very tiny light green leaves with small star shaped flowers. You can use every bit of this plant stems, leaves and roots. The Latin name is Stellaria media. Also having common names as Star weed, Starwort and Winter weed.
Externally applied it is good for boils, mosquito and insect bites, itchy rashes, scalp conditions, eczema and psoriasis, conjunctivitis (redness of the eye) and skin ulcers. Internally used for stomach ulcers, colds and coughs, sore throat, nasal congestion, rheumatism and bronchitis.
Even though it grows from summer to winter. I find it best to harvest in the spring. Using it to make teas infusions and tinctures. However, it can be harvested all year long. Next time you’re at your local heath food store most likely you can find it in capsule form.
Here are some ways I use chickweed. . .
Tea ~ 1 cup boiling water poured over 2 t. of dried or 4 t. fresh herb. Let steep 5 minuets.
Infusion ~ To be used as a skin wash or bath additive to soothe inflamed or itchy skin.
A Cool Drink ~ Cures your thirst and relieves skin irritations and helps with rheumatism. Combine 2 cups pineapple juice with a handful of fresh herb in blender, strain. Pour over ice.
The voluntary properties of the herb are also most useful in treating wounds. It also has cell-proliferating properties, useful in speeding-up the healing process.
***There are no serious side effects. Taken properly it is generally safe. Used in excess can cause diarrhea and vomiting.
Health Benefits of Strawberries
Nutrients found in strawberries are an excellent source of dietary fiber and vitamins C & K. Containing manganese, vitamin B1 and iodine. They are a good source of folic acid, biotin, and vitamin B6. Strawberries contain high levels of antioxidants, which can and do decrease the risk of chronic disease.
Ellagic acid is found in many red fruits and berries. There are studies to show consumption can increase anti-cancer activity on cancer cells. For cardiovascular health, strawberries have also been linked with effecting blood vessels, platelets and lipoproteins positively, which can reduce the risk of coronary heart diseases. A Benefit Of Rose Hip Seed Oil
Rose Hip Seed Oil is believed to be the best oil available for anti-ageing and skin rejuvenation. Numerous scientific studies have also taken place, which have yielded astounding evidence to support the use of Rosehip Seed oil.
Rose Hip Tea
To ward off colds in the winter they add a little extra dose of vitamin C. Rose hips make a nice, comforting herbal tea and the health benefits you gain by having a cup are great. Rose hip tea has a tangy flavor, not at all like the flowery scent of the rose blossom, as I had expected. Drinking this tea helps with the anti-aging from the inside.
A Benefit Of Olive Oil
Another answer revelant of the calcium puzzle is olive oil. By helping our bodies with the absorption of calcium. Unfortunately calcium is one of the hardest minerals for our bodies to absorb. Cooking with olive oil and using it as a face and body oil helps to strengthen our immune systems.
Legend has it....
That aromatherapy was born when a Persian princess was engaged to be married. Her father, the King, put rose petals into the canals, and as her lover rowed she touched the water only to find tiny droplets of rose oil on her hands.
