Chickweed (Stellaria media)

I always thought of it as a very annoying weed that, in the spring invaded my yard and garden. I despised it for it’s rapid growth until I learn of it’s healing properties. Actually it’s an herb. Having long sprawling branches that trail over the ground. It has very tiny light green leaves with small star shaped flowers. You can use every bit of this plant stems, leaves and roots. The Latin name is Stellaria media. Also having common names as Star weed, Starwort and Winter weed.

Externally applied it is good for boils, mosquito and insect bites, itchy rashes, scalp conditions, eczema and psoriasis, conjunctivitis (redness of the eye) and skin ulcers. Internally used for stomach ulcers, colds and coughs, sore throat, nasal congestion, rheumatism and bronchitis.

Even though it grows from summer to winter. I find it best to harvest in the spring. Using it to make teas infusions and tinctures. However, it can be harvested all year long. Next time you’re at your local heath food store most likely you can find it in capsule form.

Here are some ways I use chickweed. . .

Tea ~ 1 cup boiling water poured over 2 t. of dried or 4 t. fresh herb. Let steep 5 minuets.

Infusion ~ To be used as a skin wash or bath additive to soothe inflamed or itchy skin.

A Cool Drink ~ Cures your thirst and relieves skin irritations and helps with rheumatism. Combine 2 cups pineapple juice with a handful of fresh herb in blender, strain. Pour over ice.

The voluntary properties of the herb are also most useful in treating wounds. It also has cell-proliferating properties, useful in speeding-up the healing process.

***There are no serious side effects. Taken properly it is generally safe. Used in excess can cause diarrhea and vomiting.
Juliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09908245058149752454noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5574370548616819268.post-56866010423405269702011-08-03T19:22:00.024-05:002011-08-03T19:34:05.547-05:00For the Love of Goats Milk

Have you ever tried Goats Milk products ? I started using goats milk lotion and soap this summer. I LOVE THEM!!! YES, I DO!!! It is magic. Moisture is abundant. I don't mean the humidity here in the St. Louis air. I have found a great way to beat the summer dry skin. Yes, it's Goats milk. I am so happy to share my new found information with you. A healthy all natural way to heal the itchy dry skin. Goats have long produced the "milk of choice" for humankind, and are easy to pasture, breed and milk. Many products are made from goat's milk, including cheeses like traditional feta and some hard cheeses. Also very good are the lotions, soaps and shampoos. Goat's milk is white in color, and so products made from goat's milk are also white, with a tendency to be more smooth and cream-like than cow's milk products. The history goes way back.Goats were often taken aboard ships to give sailors the benefit of fresh milk, and it is reported that Captain Cook had aboard the Endeavor a goat that wore a collar saying "The globe twice encircled, this the Goat, the second to the nurse of Jove,is thus
rewarded for her never-failing milk."
We have no tried and true evidence of why they will attack some and never seem to bother others. If we understood this we would be better equipped to avoid them.
Trying to avoid mosquitoes by steering clear of bushes, fields, woods, when they are active is impossible for most of us. Especially if you love to garden like me. Mosquitoes are attracted to dark color clothing and foliage. You can distract them by burning a candle or incense. Outside you may want to build a fire. Smoke from these will deter our scent. They seek us out by following the trail of carbon dioxide we leave. Lactic acid is released from our bodies when we eat certain foods such as salty or foods that are high in potassium. Exercise also increases the chance of being bit. You should try to avoid this activity as best as you can before going outside.
I am not a big fan of DEET. Although it works well, it is very poisonous to all living things. Preferring to use essential oils, I have just finished posting herbal remedies to help avoid them.
Herbal repellents have to be applied every now and then to stay effective. I would say every hour or so.
Juliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09908245058149752454noreply@blogger.com0
